Growing your herb garden

Not only is this my favorite time of year because it starts getting warm but I start getting my indoor herb garden in order. This year, I am going to grow tarragon, chives, basil, spearmint, sage and rosemary. This is only my second year growing an indoor herb garden. I went into it having no idea how to care for the plants; I learned the hard way. My rosemary and lemon basil never never grew but the spearmint grew like 3 feet high and my cilantro would not stop growing! It is all about balance when it comes to growing your indoor herb garden…balance of sunlight, temperature and watering. One warning I have is to prevent overwatering your seedlings. Overwatering causes the plant to “damp off”. Damping off is a fungal disease that causes the stems to break off and the plants die. Allow the soil to dry for a few hours each day. Also, ensure that your plants will have access to a sunny window.

Growing your own garden is a lot of fun and the only way to really guarantee that your herbs are 100% fresh! Who knows what you are getting at the grocery store when you pick up the already-grown over priced herbs. Plus, you’ll get a nice vitamin boost from growing your own herbs. There is a real sense of fulfillment in growing your own herbs and using them in your pasta dishes, teas, etc.
